This exhibition aims to capture the landscape works of seven landscape studios currently working in Korea and their creator spirit. In ‘Verdant Collectives, Landscape Architects’ Group Exhibition | People of Verdant', ‘Verdant’ is the intention of the exhibition to highlight the most verdant and active landscape architects as creators. The group of landscape architects gathered in this exhibition are not only designers who create designs on paper, but also designers and cultural and social environment builders who put their responsible fingerprints on the land we share by implementing and directing them in physical spaces. The word “landscape” is a word that has a strong aspect of “building” and “making." The English name Landscape Architecture also means to build or create architecture. When the visual arts create any form, landscape architecture creates not only the visible landscape, but also the cultural daily life on the land and coordinates it with the surrounding environment. Therefore, the processes and attitudes of landscape architects in finding answers to the complex relationship between the conditions of the land and new purposes are interesting stories. This exhibition aims to unfold the scenes of design outcomes created by landscape architects with verdant energy and collect narratives and traces of the creative process.
The exhibition showcases the works of seven landscape design studios in a parallel format, highlighting each artist's distinctive characteristics. In the center, banners displaying each studio's philosophy hang above a small garden. On one wall, a calendar-style exhibit showcases more detailed creative processes and outcomes from each studio, allowing visitors to explore the nuances of landscape work. On another wall, excerpts from conversations and key phrases from a forthcoming book of landscape architect interviews—being produced concurrently with the exhibition—will be displayed alongside introductory texts for each studio. The final exhibition component features interview videos capturing content that couldn't be conveyed through project outcomes or written descriptions.
This project, planned and co-curated by Professor YoungJoon Choi of the Landscape Design Performance Laboratory at Seoul National University's Department of Landscape Architecture together with participating members, is part of ongoing research on the social and aesthetic performance of landscape design. The exhibition aims to reveal how landscape architects' creative characteristics influence external environment development and to document these relationships through a collection of interviews.
From the many landscape architects and design firms currently active, this exhibition features seven selected teams who have gathered bimonthly for the past 18 months to share their work and engage in peer critique. These regular meetings have fostered deeper mutual understanding and provided valuable time for verification and professional growth, culminating in this exhibition. The Landscape Design Performance Laboratory at Seoul National University intends to continue this initiative biennially, featuring new groups of landscape architects in future exhibitions.
