Ji Won Yoon, Audiovisual Art Exhibition A+C+R+S+S 2025 : I`m SO...
Synesthesia, the phenomenon where two or more different senses are mixed or crossed over their boundaries, is recognized as a highly special cognitive event experienced by only a minimal number of people. Over time, it has served as a source of inspiration for a select few artists, providing them with a unique, transcendent sensory experience that is rarely accessible to the general public.
In particular, synesthetic experiences between vision and hearing—arguably the most significant human senses—not only influence a broader audience (beyond the individual artist's personal experience) through their transformation into artistic creations, but also open up possibilities for creative production that artificially remediates synesthesia in various domains of audiovisual art, thanks to the advancement of multimedia technologies.
The exhibition "A+C+R+S+S," first launched in 2022 at Exhibition Hall 3 of the Hangaram Design Museum as "Audiovisual Chain Reaction for Synthetic Synesthesia," is an experimental showcase aimed at exploring the roots of cross-modal transitions between what humans see and hear within the context of audiovisual art based on digital media. The exhibition further refines methods to reinterpret and newly realize synesthetic phenomena.
This new exhibition, "A+C+R+S+S 2025: I'm SO...," is planned as an experimental expansion that builds upon the achievements of the previous exhibition while incorporating new explorations. With the full title "Audiovisual, Cross-modal Rendition of Synthetic Synesthesia" and the subtitle "Immersive, Multimodal Sensory Orchestra," the exhibition aims to implement an ambient, multi-channel orchestral experience optimized for the characteristics of the same exhibition hall.
Six audiovisual works, divided into the same number of channels, are meticulously arranged throughout the exhibition space. This experience of multiple cross-modal transitions not only reflects the essence of audiovisual art but also raises questions about the authenticity and validity of artificially synthesized synesthesia. Visitors are welcome to seek their answers to these questions in their own unique ways, while also experiencing an artistic form of synesthesia through the works presented in novel formats.
