KNCDC Choreo Connection: Seoul
Park Jaehyun x Jung Jina – Choreo Connection: Seoul A work that raises fundamental questions about life and existence in an irrational world.

  • Launched in 2024, Choreo Connection is a local collaboration project that aims to bridge local communities and the Seoul metropolitan area, exploring the potential for growth and balanced development in contemporary dance. This performance brings back two works that premiered last year: A Perpendicular Night by choreographer Park Jaehyun, known for his raw, provocative stage aesthetics, and No, Yes by Jung Jina, a piece that delves into sincere movement rooted in human desire and social issues. Confronting fundamental questions of life and existence, the two works come together in a double bill on the stage of Korea National Contemporary Dance Company’s Choreo Connection: Seoul.

    A Perpendicular NightㅣChoreography Park Jaehyun
'A perpendicular line' refers to a perfect straight line that forms a right angle with a given line or plane.

A Perpendicular Night seeks the truth of a perfect life by correcting the chaos and clamor through primal movement.
     ChoreographyㅣPark Jaehyun
Park Jaehyun is a dancer and choreographer based in Busan. He gained recognition as a dancer after winning the Grand Prize at the 18th KBS Busan Dance Concours in 2000, and in 2016 he founded Kyunghee Dance Theater, continuing to present works characterized by unique movements and a creative dance style. Park began his choreographic career in 2008, marking his debut with The Guy = Crying, which was selected for the Choreographers Intensive Fostering and Support Project by the Arts Council Korea (ARKO). In 2009, he won the Silver Medal at the 3rd Delphic Games organized by UNESCO, and in 2011 he was selected as Young Dancer of the Year at the Critics’ Choice Awards. He also received the Grand Prize for his work Record of Old Age at the 21st Busan Dance Festival and the Grand Prize for his work Geumhonga Geumhonga at the 25th Busan Dance Festival, and in 2017 he served as a guest choreographer for the 77th subscription performance of the Busan Metropolitan Dance Company. In 2020, he earned the Best Work Award for his piece Good Morning Ildong – About Sadness at the AK21 Competition for Performer-Choreographers as part of the 16th Busan International Dance Festival. In 2022, he staged A Murder Case in the Well – People Are Living in There, a work that embodied his identity and self-reflection. Park has been recognized for presenting “a stage full of rawness” and “unfamiliar and striking images.”

    No, YesㅣChoreography Jung Jina
No, Yes begins with Albert Camus’s The Rebel. Even though we strive to live, life ultimately ends in death, rendering human existence fundamentally absurd. And yet, in order to exist, we are compelled to rebel against this absurdity.

"Why do we try so hard to live?" The piece begins with this very question.

No, Yes explores why we must resist and how we should exist in order to preserve our values and freedom in the face of life’s absurdity. The dancers confront absurdity by existing more fiercely–at times saying “No,” at other times responding with a “Yes.” Their bodies traverse the space between life and death, revealing both the futility and the freedom that humans bear–through endlessly repeated acts and collapsing boundaries.

“And still, how are we to live?”

     ChoreographyㅣJung Jina
Jung Jina is a choreographer and dancer based in Daejeon. Jung has performed in numerous works as a member of the Meta Dance Project since 2011 and began her creative pursuits in 2015. Her inspirations mainly come from instinctual human desires, everyday social issues, and human relationships. Using these themes as motifs, she aims to express movements that are authentic and unique to individual dancers. In 2014, she was selected for the Daejeon New Generation Artistar program by the Daejeon Culture and Arts Foundation, which led her to participate in the ImPulsTanz Vienna International Dance Festival. In 2015, she showcased her first solo performance titled 30–1, supported by the Daejeon Culture and Arts Foundation. In 2022, she founded the dance company Projet Nuement and presented a performance titled Color of Bodyas part of the Young Artist Support Project by the Daejeon Culture and Arts Foundation. In 2023, she received the Dance Performance Award from the 29th MOMM Dance Art Award for her work After meeting. Among her major choreographic works are How to Be a Tree(2023), Hue(2022), After meeting(2022), bossy, la(2019), and bossy(2015).

Jayu TheaterImplement experimental theater by boldly breaking down the walls of the stage and audience.

Experimental in form and in content, the Jayu Theater has no official divide between the audience and the stage. Instead, it is the producer’s decision to arrange up to 300 seats however way he or she pleases. Proscenium, arena, thrust and atypical forms in staging are all possible and the ability to adjust the lower stage makes it possible to create a dimensional look.
