JIJI Guitar
Praised by The Washington Post as “mesmerizing” and “stirring,” JIJI is a boundary-defying guitarist known for her virtuosity and command of both acoustic and electric guitars. Her programs range from classical and contemporary works to free improvisation.
In 2021, The Washington Post named her one of “21 composers/performers who sound like tomorrow.” She has appeared at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center, 92Y, Caramoor, the National Gallery of Art, and more, with features on PBS, NPR, FOX-TV, and Hong Kong’s RTHK. In 2016, she became the first guitarist in 30 years to win first prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition.
JIJI has premiered works by leading composers including Steven Mackey, David Lang, Michael Gilbertson, Natalie Dietterich, Hilary Purrington, and Paul Lansky. In 2024, she releases UNBOUND, an album of commissioned works. Recent chamber collaborations include appearances with the New York Philharmonic’s Nightcap series, Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Verona Quartet, and violinist Danbi Um. In the 2023–24 season, she debuted at Verizon Hall with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, premiering a new concerto by Steven Mackey.
As a concerto soloist, JIJI has performed with the American Composers Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, New West Symphony, and more. She is noted for her interpretations of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and for premiering four major concertos in the last five years.
A committed educator, she serves as Associate Professor of Guitar at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and has given master classes at Yale, Peabody, and Dublin’s National Concert Hall.
JIJI also composes and performs her own works. She is currently working on an EP with R&B singer Daniel Fears, set for release in summer 2024. She is represented by Kirshbaum Associates and sponsored by Augustine Strings and GuitarLift.
