Messiah is one of the most beloved and frequently performed masterpieces in the classical music tradition. Comprising 53 movements in three parts, the oratorio narrates the story of salvation through the life of Jesus Christ: Part I depicts Prophecy and Nativity, Part II focuses on Passion and Atonement, and Part III proclaims Resurrection and Eternal Life. The libretto was compiled by Charles Jennens, drawing directly from biblical texts, primarily from the Old and New Testaments.
The work premiered on April 12, 1742, in Dublin, Ireland, under Handel’s direction and was met with great acclaim. It has since become Handel’s most celebrated composition and remains one of the most widely performed and studied choral–orchestral works in the field of classical sacred music. A famous anecdote recounts that during the first performance of the “Hallelujah” chorus, King George II rose to his feet; the audience followed, establishing a tradition that continues to this day.
Handel’s influence extended far beyond his own era. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart reorchestrated Messiah for performance in Vienna, bringing new vitality to the work. Ludwig van Beethoven, deeply inspired by Handel’s monumental choral style, praised him as “the greatest composer who ever lived” and regarded Messiah as a work of enduring greatness. Felix Mendelssohn also drew from the traditions of both Bach and Handel, integrating their oratorio and Passion models into his own masterpieces such as St. Paul (1836) and Elijah (1846).
The year 2025 marks the 340th anniversary of the birth of two towering figures of the Baroque era—George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach, both born in 1685. This anniversary is being commemorated through concerts and festivals in major cities across Germany, the United Kingdom, Hungary, and beyond.
Since 2005, the Seoul Motet Choir has introduced the “Sing Along Messiah” concert format to Korean audiences for the first time and has presented complete performances of Messiah more than twenty times. In celebration of Handel’s 340th anniversary, the Choir once again presents “Messiah – Sing Along with the Audience”, honoring this timeless masterpiece and its enduring legacy in the classical music tradition.
