Mina Yoo, Mui Cheuk Yin, and Yamada Setsuko
Writing the history of contemporary dance in Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan
Solo Project by Three Choreographers and Three Dancers

Mina Yoo from South Korea conveys messages intuitively through minimalistic production and is seen as leading the trend by breaking down the boundaries between life and art. Mui Cheuk Yin is a solo artist representing the Hong Kong dance scene. Yamada Setsuko from Japan is a pioneer of Japanese contemporary dance who has presented works with a centripetal and delicate form. Solo Project presented by these three artists consists of three 30-minute performances, each by a single performer. The worlds of three choreographers, each of whom has been steadily active in their own countries with a distinctive choreographic language, unfold on stage through the body of a single dancer.

On AirㅣChoreographer Mina YooㅣDancer Im Jongkyung
 An unexpected event with resonance.
An event is not created.
 It is something you encounter.

 ChoreographerㅣMina Yoo
Based on her education and diverse experiences as a guest choreographer in the U.S. and Europe, Mina Yoo served as a professor of dance at the Korea National University of Arts. She is currently active as the Creative Adviser at Seoul Tanz Station and an adjunct professor at Kookmin University, while continuing her vibrant choreographic work. Mina Yoo’s pieces unravel psychological conflicts through a refined movement language, establishing an aesthetic resonance with audiences through a postmodern approach and technique. She was the first in Korea to be invited twice to the Venice Biennale, where she presented <Active Zone> and <Boulevard>. Her work <2015> won the Best Dance Award at the 2016 Edaily Culture Awards, and Nausea received the Best Work Award at the 2018 Korean Dance Critics’ Awards, establishing her distinctive choreographic voice. Through continuous experimentation and research, she remains actively engaged in creating new work.

Red JuneㅣChoreographer Mui Cheuk YinㅣDancer Hwang Seoyoung
About blood and birth, fresh and rotten, fear and hope, red and black, life and death.

ChoreographerㅣMui Cheuk Yin
Mui Cheuk Yin is one of Hong Kong’s leading choreographers and dancers. Centered on clear aesthetic expression and a strong sense of contemporaneity, her work focuses on exploring human emotions and relationships. As an internationally renowned solo artist, she has been invited to numerous prestigious festivals, including the Belgium International Arts Festival (1994), the Venice Biennale Dance Festival (1999), the Lyon Biennale de la Danse (2000), Dance Biennale Tokyo (2002), and the 25th and 35th Anniversary celebrations of the Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal. Her dedication and passion for the development of Hong Kong dance over more than 30 years have earned her deep respect within the community. She has been honored with multiple accolades, including the Hong Kong Dance Awards in 2001 and 2009, and the Hong Kong Dance Alliance Distinguished Achievement Award in 2012. Her major works include <Fragrant Garden>, <Water Music>, and <Desperately Seeking Miss Blossom>.

Jung Logyee, Here I amㅣChoreographer Yamana SetsukoㅣDancer Jung Logyee
“Choreographing a solo dance begins with a conversation.” I first sent these words to Jung Logyee.

To be called by someone.
To call someone’s name.
With what kind of voice?
With what kind of gesture?

Some names are murmured in silence.
Like feathers scattering in the sky,
like petals falling to the ground,
like a single speck of ash crawling over a scorched land,
names overflow in this world once again today.
Leaning on this one body as my only refuge,

I am, here, now.

ChoreographerㅣYamada Setsuko
Yamada Setsuko began dancing in 1971 while studying theater at Meiji University, joining the Butoh research group Tenshi-kan, where she trained in improvisational dance until 1980. As a pioneer of contemporary dance in Japan, she has performed extensively not only in Japan but also internationally, beginning with the Avignon and Barcelona Festivals in 1983, and later in major cities such as Seoul, New York, Paris, London, and Moscow. After her first performance in Korea in 1986 at the invitation of Korean modern dancer Kim Maeja, she has continued fostering exchanges with Korea. In 1989, she founded the dance company BIWAKEI and created works such as <Flying Girl> and <Love’s Signature Tune>. Since 2000, she has been a professor in the Department of Film and Stage Arts at Kyoto University of the Arts (formerly Kyoto University of Art and Design). She also served as a visiting professor at the Korea National University of Arts in 2017 at the invitation of Korean contemporary dancer Nam Jeongho, and received the Japan Dance Forum Award in 2019. Recently, she has been actively collaborating with the next generation of dancers and choreographers.

Jayu TheaterImplement experimental theater by boldly breaking down the walls of the stage and audience.

Experimental in form and in content, the Jayu Theater has no official divide between the audience and the stage. Instead, it is the producer’s decision to arrange up to 300 seats however way he or she pleases. Proscenium, arena, thrust and atypical forms in staging are all possible and the ability to adjust the lower stage makes it possible to create a dimensional look.
