MAGE Opera Orchestra
As the festival orchestra of the MAGE International Belcanto Festival (MIBF 2024), it is an orchestra that will perform at gala concerts, documentary operas, etc. held in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do in 2024. It is an opera orchestra composed mainly of principals and members of major domestic and international opera theaters and orchestras.
Conductor Hae LEE
A Korean conductor, Hae Lee was the 2nd prize
winner of the Kussewitzky Conducting Competition in Italy and the Finalist of
the Besançon Conducting Competition in France. Hae was invited to the LEAD!
Foundation’s masterclass in Finland and after it, he was selected as the young
conductor for the final concert of the Fiskars Festival. In this concert, Hae
shared the podium with Esa-Pekka Salonen, James Gaffigan, and Jukka-Pekka
Saraste.
In the States, Hae served as a cover
conductor of Marin Alsop for her concerts at Carnegie Hall. Hae also conducted
at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall as an assistant for David Hayes and Mannes
Orchestra when they performed Ives’ Symphony No. 4 which requires three
conductors. Hae was a fellow of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and
the assistant conductor of Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Academy.
In South Korea, Hae was invited to the master
classes with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean National Symphony Orchestra,
and Korea National Opera. He conducted operas such as Le nozze di Figaro,
L’elisir d’amore, La Bohème, and Gianni Schicchi.
In Europe, Hae studied at Hochschule für
Musik und Theater Hamburg as an exchange student, and he has conducted
Orchestre national d’Île-de-France, Orchestre Dijon Bourgogne, Orchestre Victor
Hugo, and Orchestra sinfonica città di Grosseto.
Hae received his Bachelor of Arts in
Conducting from the Korea National University of Arts, and he holds his Master
of Music from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. Hae is
appointed as Associate Conductor (Jack and Mary Ann Frable Associate Conductor
Chair) of Richmond Symphony.
Conductor Rira KIM
Berlin based South Korean conductor Rira
Kim, recently was the assistant conductor at the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in
Netherlands for the project ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Unsuk Chin, performed in
Concergebow. She was also the assistant conductor of Korean National Opera
(KNO) opera studio season 2023, assisting and conducting productions such as
Soprano Sooyeon LEE
On the stage of
After having won the 2nd prize and audience prize at the 2015 ARD
international music competition in Germany, the south Korean soprano began to
receive attention from Europe. Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor), Gilda (Rigoletto),
Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Amina (La Sonnambula), Marie (La
Fille du Regiment) have been her main roles among others on the stage of
Oldenburg Theater in Germany, where she has been a member of Ensemble since the
season 16/17.
In the upcoming seasons, she will make Musikverein debut in the Golden
Hall in the December 2019 in a series of New Years Concerts with the
Tonkünstler Orchestra conducted by Alfred Eschwé. Also, she will make a solo
debut at Wigmore hall in London in October 2020 as a recital of Cardiff singer
song prize finalist.
She graduated with distinction from the Universität für Musik und
darstellende Kunst Wien, where she obtained a Master’s degree in opera by KS
Edith Lienbacher, and she graduated postgraduate degrees in Vocal, Lied and
Oratorio by KS Gabriele Fontana.
Besides the prizes at the 2015 ARD international music competition, she
has won numerous other competitions as a young soprano, including Operalia
competition, the Gian Battista Viotti Competition, Pavarotti Giovani Awards, Beaumarchais
International Music Competition in Vienna and the International Mozart
Competition in Salzburg.
She had a solo concert with Helmut Deutsch in India and sang as a Keumho
young Artist in Korea, and Frauen Kirche in Dresden. Also she sang at the
Vienna Musikverein, MuTh, Berlin Philharmonic, Dubai Opera house. She joined
Cully Classique festival, SWR festival , Rheingau festival, and Schwarzwald
Festival. At the university, she played as Adele in J. Strauß’ operetta Die
Fledermaus at the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn.
Soprano Haeji CHANG
Hae Ji Chang, soprano, has
been described as “an exciting young artist on the rise” (Opera Boston) with a
voice “full of silvery color and nuance” (Boston Globe). Recently she performed
Violetta in Verdi’s La traviata in Seoul.
Ms. Chang has performed
between the United States and Korea from 2010. Gilda (Rigoletto) in Michigan
and Maine, Mimi (La bohème) with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Pamina in San
Jose, Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) in Aspen. She also sang Marguerite (Faust),
Sophie (Werther), Pamina (The Magic Flute) in Seoul, Susanna (Le nozze di
Figaro) and Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) in Yeosu in Korea. In the past,
She made her debut at Seattle Opera as Setsuko from An American Dream(World
Premiere).
She trained as a
Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist in LA and sang Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen
conducted by Plácido Domingo, with subsequent appearances as the First Lady in
Mozart’s The Magic Flute and as Crobyle in Thaïs. As a Gerdine Young Artist,
she also covered the role of Mélisande in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande with
Opera Theatre of Saint Louis.
Ms. Chang also made her
debut with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as Ste. Marguerite in Honegger’s
oratorio, Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher, which also marked her debut at Carnegie Hall.
She was the soprano soloist in Fauré’s Requiem with Colorado Music Festival Chamber
Orchestra and sang Exultate Jubilate K.165 with West Los Angeles Symphony in
Royce Hall. Ms. Chang made her international concert debut in Moscow and St.
Petersburg as well.
Ms. Chang won many
competitions such as, Plácido Domingo's Operalia Competition in Verona, Palm
Springs Opera Guild, Metropolitan Opera National Council, Peter Elvins
competition.
In this season, she will
return as Marguerite and Pamina in Korea and also make her debut as Zerlina in
Seoul Arts Center in October.
Counter-tenor Siman CHUNG
Siman Chung, countertenor
from Busan, South Korea, returned to the Metropolitan Opera for the 2021-22
season, to participate in their productions of RODELINDA and AKHNATEN.
In the summer of 2022, he
will sing the role of Siebel in FAUST for the first time at the Seoul Arts
Center in Korea.
In 2022-23, he will join the
San Francisco Opera for the first time. Later that season, he will return to
San Francisco ,for concerts with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and
Chorale. He will sing in the Three countertenors concert with L’orchestre de L’Opera Royal at Chateau de Versailles.
He will return to the role
of ORPHEE in his debut with Edmonton Opera. In the spring of 2018, he made his
role and company debut with Opera Columbus in the Berlioz version of Gluck’s
opera ORPHEE ET EURYDICE.This same production then traveled to Toronto and the
Banff Festival. In all three venues, he had a great personal success.
In 2018-19, Mr. Chung
created a leading role in the new opera BEAUTY AND SADNESS, which had its World
Premiere in Hong Kong. That season ,in New York, he sang concerts with Voices
of Ascension and as a guest with Juilliard’s 415 Early Music Ensemble.
The 2016-17 season saw Mr.
Chung’s return to Korea National Opera in Vivaldi’s ORLANDO FINTO PAZZO. That
season ,he made his NY solo recital debut, presented by The Opera Index
Foundation, after winning one of that organization’s prestigious Awards. In that
same year, he also received a Grant from The Sullivan Foundation, and First
Prize at the Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition. In addition, he won
the “Best Countertenor” Prize at the Francisco Vinas International Singing
Competition in Barcelona.
Siman Chung made his debut
at Carnegie Hall in 2015, singing Handel’s MESSIAH. He attended Mannes School
of Music in NY, where he sang the leading role of the Refugee in Jonathan
Dove’s opera FLIGHT, with Mannes Opera.
Tenor Kyungho KIM
The young Korean tenor Kyungho Kim is a graduate of the National
University of Arts in Seoul and an alumnus of the Universit't der K+nste in Berlin. His teachers were
Sangho Choi and Enrico Facini. He participated successfully in international
competitions and was honored by prizes awarded by Competizione dell Opera‘ and
́ ‚Vincenzo Bellini Competition‘ in Italy.
He was a scholar of ‚Richard-Wagner-Stiftung‘ in Bayreuth, ‚Stiftung LYRA‘ in Z+rich and of the ‚Liz Mohn Kultur- und Musikstiftung‘. Kyungho Kim gain first experiences as a concert soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in Venice in 2009 und 2010. Moreover, he appeared as concert singer in Salzburg and Berlin.
From 2011 to 2013, he was a member of the International Opera Studio of
the Staatsoper in Berlin, where he performed 1. Geharnischter in „Die
Zauberfl*te“, Prinz in Wolf-Ferrari‘s „Aschenputtel“ and Flavio in Norma“.
In December 2012, he debuted to great acclaim as Chevalier des Grieux in a production of Massenet’s Manon“ in Dortmund.
Furthermore, he appeared as the Duca/“Rigoletto“, Macduff/ “Macbeth“, Rodolfo/“La Bohème“, Roméo/“Roméo et Juliette“, Gabriele Adorno/“Simon Boccanegra“ at the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, asRodolfo and Ismaele/“Nabucco“ at Oper Leipzig, as S'nger/“Der Rosenkavalier“ in Dortmund, Tamino/“Die Zauberfl*te“ at Oper Graz and debuted in a production of Turandot at Bregenz Festival. It was at Semperoper Dresden, at Staatsoper Stuttgart and at Theater St. Gallen, where he was recently invited to sing Rodolfo again. Moreover, Kyungho Kim guested at Oper Graz and at Staatstheater Kassel to perform Gounod’s Roméo in „Roméo et Juliette“.
Kyungho Kim was member of Oper Leipzig until summer 2019 performing roles such as Edgardo/“Lucia di Lammermoor“, Tamino, Alfredo/“La Traviata“ and Duca/“Rigoletto“. Now guest he had an enormous personal success with his debuts as Prince/“Rusalka“ and „Faust“ in St.Gallen, highly acclaimed by public and critics. On a short notice he sang the role of Prince/“Rusalka“ also at Vlaamse Opera, the production can be seen on live stream. He was reinvited for Rodolfo/“La Bohème“ in season 2021/22.
Future plans(2022/23)include for example his return to State Opera Prague, his debut at Staatsoper Stuttgart as Prince/Rusalka.
Baritone Joo Won KANG
JOO
WON KANG, a native of South Korea, is consistently establishing himself as one
of the most talented baritones today, both with audience and critics.He made
his Metropolitan Opera debut as Marcello in La Boheme. He also appeared in the
company's new production of Don Carlo, as well as Turandot(Ping)
Mr
Kang has appeared in leading roles,such as Figaro in The Barber of Seville,
Germont in La Traviata, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Dandini in La Cenerentola,
Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, the title role in Eugene Onegin and Ping in
Turandot in opera companies throughout the US, including San Francisco Opera,
Seattle Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Canadian Opera Company, Arizona
Opera, Wolf Trap Opera and Utah Opera. He also appeared at Boston Symphony’s Lady Macbeth of Mtensk in Boston and Carnegie Hall and the live
concert recording will be released with Deutsche Grammophon Label.
Highlights
of Mr. Kang’s 2016-2017 season include his debut at the
Wexford Festival, Ireland where he sang the leading role of Corrado in
Donizetti’s Maria de Rudenz with great success. Of his
performance, Opera News Magazine called his “...The
standout voice of this year’s festival…” He sang the role of Chou-Enlai in John Adams' Nixon in China with
the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by the composer. This summer he sings
Germont in La Traviata with PORT opera, and in the fall he returns to San
Francisco Opera to sing Ping in Turandot, which opens their new season.
Additional upcoming debuts include Arizona Opera, and Opera Theatre of St.
Louis. In 2024
In
the 2015-16 season, Mr. Kang returned to Wolf Trap Opera to sing Sharpless in
Madama Butterfly at the Filene Centre, with the National Symphony Orchestra. In
2015-16 He also sang the title role in Eugene Onegin with North Carolina Opera,
Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Fort Worth Opera, and his debut in Les Pêcheurs de Perles with Seattle Opera.
His
engagements for the 2014-15 season included Marcello in San Francisco Opera’s family performances of La Bohème.
He also made debuts as Guglielmo in Così
fan tutte with Opera Naples, and as Germont in La Traviata with North Carolina
Opera. He then went to the Spoleto Festival USA, to sing in the World Premiere
of Huang Ruo's opera Paradise Interrupted, which he repeated in Singapore and
at the Lincoln Center Festival.
Mr.
Kang made his debut with Korea National Opera in the new opera Soul Mate, He
also made his role debut with the company as Conte di Luna in Trovatore and
joined the roster of Wolf Trap Opera performing the double role of Le Directeur
and Le Gendarme in Les Mamelles de Tirésias as well as Moralès in Carmen with the National Symphony Orchestra.
As a
member of the 2011 Merola Opera Program, he was invited to join San Francisco
Opera’s prestigious Adler Fellowship, where he was a member for two years.
Mr. Kang appeared on the stage of San Francisco’s
War Memorial Opera House, in a variety of roles including Captain Gardiner in
Heggie’s Moby Dick, which was televised nationally on PBS and released on
DVD. With the company he sang the role of Figaro in San Francisco Opera’s family performances of The Barber of Seville. Prior to his time in
San Francisco, Mr. Kang was a member of the Young Artist Program at Florida
Grand Opera, where his roles included Germont in La Traviata.

Komische Oper Berlin and sung "Die lustige Witwe(Camille de
Rosillon)" in Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden. the tenor recorded
three Mozart masses on CD with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra. And he sang
"Stabat Mater by Dvorak" with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra (incl. CD
recording), "Magic Flute" in Korea National Opera, "La
Traviata(Alfredo)" in Theater Osnabrück, Eugen

Mater by Dvorak"with the Elbphilharmonie Orchester in St.Michael Hamburg,
and the "Carmina Burana" in Isarphilharmonie with Münchner
Symphoniker" and in Wiener Musikverein with Tonkünstler-Orchester with
the Conductor Yutaka Sado..
In the 2021/22
season, Sung min Song was able to show the full range of his repertoire: At the
Staatstheater Augsburg he performed "Gounod's Faust" , "Bach's
Johnannes Passion (Evangelist)" in Warsaw and at the Musikverein Vienna, "Mendelssohn's
2nd Symphony Lobgesang" with the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and
"Orff's Carmina Burana" at the Mecklenburg State Theater at the
Schlossfestspiele in Schwerin. he interpreted the role of Brighella in Strauss'
"Ariadne auf Naxos" at the Landestheater Salzburg and Saarländisches
Staatstheater, "Verdi's Messa da Requiem" at the Theater Münster and
St.Michaelis in Hamburg, and "Beethoven's 9th Symphony" with the
Bamberg Symphony Orchestra on New Year's Eve 2021. The concert was televised in
Germany and Singapore.
In 2019 he
appeared at the Tyrolean Festival in Erl in a production of "Rossini's
Guillaume Tell (Arnold)" conducted by Michael Güttler and sang
"Puccini's Messa di Gloria" with the MDR Sinfonieorchester and MDR
Rundfunkchor conducted by Domingo Hindoyan at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. In
2018, the tenor sang "Verdi's Messa da Requiem" at the Rheingau Music
Festival as well as in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence under the baton
of Kent Nagano. The performance of "Strauss Feuersnot " with the
Munich Radio Orchestra conducted by Ulf Schirmer was released on CD by
cpo. In 2016, the Bavarian Radio Kissinger Summer Festival broadcasted
"Rossini's Stabat Mater" with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra
conducted by Alain Altinoglu. Sung min Song has been an ensemble member at
the Saarländisches Staatstheater, he thrilled audiences and the press as Arnold
in Rossini's "Guillaume Tell"; the opera production was recorded and
broadcast by Arte Concert.
The artist
has received numerous awards at competitions such as the Richard Strauss
Singing Competition, Anneliese Rothenberger Prize, Gasteig Music Prize,
Kissinger Summer Luitpold Prize, 3rd prize at the 33 ° Concorso
Internazionale Valsesia Musica 2017, at the Hariclea Darclée Festival and the
International Voice Competition second prize and Grand Prix and Prix Special
ADAMI at the Vincenzo Bellini Concours International de Belcanto in Paris.
