◦Curatorial Intent:
Now in its 14th edition, the Seoul Modern Art Show 2024 has grown into one of the leading art fairs representing the Seoul Fine Arts Association and the broader Korean art scene since its inception in 2009. Centered in Seoul, a hub where diverse cultures and arts converge, the exhibition has evolved into a global platform, connecting the Korean art market with international audiences. This year's theme, "Expanding Horizons," underscores the art world's ongoing commitment to collaboration and mutual growth while reaffirming the role of art in fostering happiness, communication, and cultural exchange.
◦Exhibition Content:
1. Happy Together with ART
Now in its fifth year, Happy Together with ART provides a platform for artists with developmental disabilities, recommended by the Seoul Jung-gu Community Rehabilitation Center and various institutions nationwide, to showcase their talents. This initiative promotes social interaction and communication through performances and artworks created in collaboration with professional artists, highlighting the themes of inclusion, collaboration, and growth. Launched during the 10th Seoul Modern Art Show in 2019, this program has become a cornerstone of the exhibition.
2. Future Artists
Featuring award-winning works from the Seoul International Youth Art Contest, this exhibition supports young artists worldwide who demonstrate exceptional talent and passion for art. By presenting their works alongside those of established artists, the show aims to inspire and encourage the next generation of creatives. The contest, first held in 2010, marks its 15th anniversary this year.
3. Embracing Diversity: A Special Exhibition for Foreign Artists Residing in Korea
As part of its efforts to differentiate itself, the 2024 Seoul Modern Art Show offers exhibition opportunities to foreign artists living in Korea. This special exhibition promotes cultural diversity through visual and cultural exchanges, laying the groundwork for a new paradigm in the global art landscape.
4. International Exchange Exhibition: Promoting Cultural Exchange
The exhibition will also feature an international section, including the LA-Seoul Contemporary Art Perspective exhibition, held earlier in July. LA-based artists who participated have been invited to engage in further international collaboration. In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the LA Fine Arts Association, this exchange underscores the importance of the Korean community and contributes to the development of global networks for contemporary Korean art. By fostering greater cultural exchange between Korean and international artists, the exhibition seeks to expand the diversity and global reach of Korean art.
5. Elite Artists Exhibition – Booth & Archive Exhibition
This section showcases influential artists across a wide range of genres, with a focus on their distinctive artistic languages. The Booth Exhibition and the Archive Exhibition, featuring works collected by the Seoul Fine Arts Association over the past 22 years, aim to engage the public in the art market. By offering artworks at accessible prices, these exhibitions seek to lower barriers to art acquisition and establish a structured distribution system, supporting the growth of a vibrant and sustainable artist community.
