 "The ensemble's playing is incredibly solid and well-balanced. All four musicians perform at the same level and their music-making is enthralling." (Lukas Hagen)

It was with these words that Lukas Hagen, first violinist of the renowned Hagen Quartet, described the four musicians' artistic quality after their performance at the International Mozart Competition held in Salzburg in 2014. Lukas Hagen was president of the Jury. The quartet went on to win First Prize at the Competition.

Established at the Korean National University of Arts in 2007, the Novus String Quartet is one of the leading chamber music ensembles in Korea.

One year after its founding, the quartet celebrated inaugural success at the International Chamber Music Competition Osaka, where the musicians were awarded Third Prize. One year later, the quartet received Third Prize at the 2009 Chamber Music Competition in Lyon.

Since the quartets triumph at the prestigious ARD International Chamber Music Competition in Munich in 2012, where it was awarded Second Prize, the Novus String Quartet has gained steady recognition in Europe. In 2014, the quartet won the first prize at the International Mozart Competition. All competition of Novus String Quartet is assessed that the quartet written a new chamber music history as the first Korean record of the Quartet.

During the past season, the Novus String Quartet played at the Musikfest Berlin, Schwarzwald Musikfertival, Schwetzingen Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Varna International Music Festival, Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden, Festival Internacional De Música De Marvão, Festival de Musique de Wissembourg, MITO Settembre Musica, 2023 Edinburgh International Festival and so on. The Quartet has been invited continuously from these international music festivals.

The quartet played several world-famous concert halls such as the Musikverein Wien, Berliner Phiharmonie, Pierre Boulez Saal, Kölner Philharmonie, Hercules Hall of the Munich, Wigmore Hall, Wiener Konzerhaus, Stuttgart Liederhalle, Concertgebouw, Tonhalle Zürich and so on.

Their first CD (Novus Quartet #1) was released at the French Label Aparté in spring 2016, presenting works from Beethoven, Webern and the rarely played Korean composer Isang Yun. In 2017, the second recording of the string quartet(Tchaikovski) was released. In 2018, the recording for the 30th opening anniversary of the Seoul Arts Center, was released. In 2019, the recording of Death and the Maiden(Schubert) and the recording of the piano quintet(Franck) with the pianist Michel Dalberto was released. The recording of the piano quintet won the Diapason gold medal. In 2022, the recording of the Shostakovich string quartet was released.

Since 2014/2015, The Novus String Quartet that belong to the global agency “Impresariat Simmenauer” with the Arditti Quartet, the Belcea Quartet, the Artemis Quartet and others, is working actively on the world stage.
