Ensemble Festival

Started in 1989, in remembrance of the 1st anniversary of the Music Hall, the Ensemble Festival, one of the main programs of the Recital Hall, has been held annually, until now. The Ensemble Festival consists of the Spring Festival centering around composers in March, the Youth Festival in May, the Gwachon Contemporary Arts Museum Festival in July which is an open-air concert at summer night, and a contest for the best works of budding composers in October.

Till 1999, the Festival has given 73 concerts in which more than 50 home and foreign chamber ensembles took part, and has contributed to the foundation of chamber ensemble of Korea. Now, the Ensemble Festival is the best and biggest ensemble festival of Korea both in name and reality. In 1999 and 1997, it couldn't be held due to the lack of lovers of chamber ensemble. It is hard for a small-sized ensemble festival to be maintained in existence because people and sponsors prefer large-scaled orchestra or invitation one in where world-famous artists take part. Worrying about the cultural climate of Korea which such a meaningful event as the Ensemble Festival was ignored, the music world reflected on itself and the Seoul Arts Center exerted itself to further such cultural environments where people enjoyed diversity in music. Owing to these efforts it revived in 1998.
